Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF5100 17 Inch Wide Printer

Canon’s entry in the category is a little longer in the tooth than Epson’s, however one that certainly merits consideration. At 117-lbs and almost 40 inches wide, the imagePROGRAF JPF5100 is even larger than the 4900; however, in high volume scenarios its heft and durability will definitely be appreciated. Speaking of high volume, print speed is where this machine shines brightest. Sporting a dual print head system that is composed of 30,720 (!) nozzles, it will handle the same jobs given to the 4900 in nearly - half the time.
The 1PF5100 also features a 12-ink system with an automatically swapping matte black – so that’s one more cartridge than the 4900. In addition to cartridges for CYMK and RGB, the printer features Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Matte Black, Photo Black, Grey and Photo Grey. However, the ink cartridge capacity is 130 ml while the Epson’s is 200 ml for about the same price.

Additionally its resolution is less than that of the Stylus Pro 4900 at 1400 x 1200 dpi, utilizing droplets that measure 4 pi. The LUCIA ink used is rated fade resistant to 115 years vs. Epson’s at 200 plus. While this may seem a small detail as you’ll likely be dust before your prints are faded, it’s not like they hit the magic number and suddenly fade… it’s a gradual process which you may begin to notice well in advance of the supposed expiration date depending on the conditions of storage.
The LUCIA system does however produce phenomenal images in both color and black and white – boasting the same three-black methodology incorporated in its competitor.
Other features include built-in color calibration, which detects variations in the density levels of the inks and makes adjustments based on its findings, 10/100Base-T and USB connectivity, and roll-paper handling similar to the 4900, At a street price of $2599 and retailing as low as $1695, again, this printer isn’t for those wishing to knock out a few 5 x 7 prints on occasion. If, however, print speed and color accuracy is a primary concern, you can’t go wrong with the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF5100.
